SLJ- 14!

Hello Bloggers, I'm back and at it again!
Today is the 14th day of the Summer Learning Journey and also the holidays! If you don't know what the Summer Learning Journey is then keep reading, otherwise, skip to the next paragraph! So the Summer Learning Journey happens through out the summer holidays and the reason why we should do it is because we spend all that time in school learning but when we have the holidays, we forget about everything because we are having so much fun! Then we have what is called a Summer Slump which kind of shows how your learning was, before and after the holidays. The reason why we should do it is so we don't forget everything we learnt but we also learn new things! If you come 1st, 2nd or 3rd, out of your school, then you win awesome prizes but if you come 1st out of your cluster you win a Chromebook or many other cool prizes! I think its worth it!

Each day, there are 2 main activities which are both worth 4 points and then there is a main activity which is worth 6 points. If you complete all of them, then you get 14 points in total! Each comment or reply you do as well is 2 points each! Okay, lets get started! This is what I have to do for the first activity!
Activity 1: Medical Mavericks [4 points]
Over the years, many important discoveries have been made by clever people looking to help others. Two of these are women - Florence Nightingale and Marie Curie whose work has been widely recognised and appreciated. Both women lived extraordinary lives.
Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 in England. When she grew up, she trained to be a nurse and, as an adult, was sent to Turkey during the Crimean War to look after wounded soldiers. When she arrived, the hospitals were very dirty so she spent money to clean them up and to provide the soldiers with quality care. She saved many lives.
Marie Curie was born in Poland in 1867. Eventually, she moved to France to go to university. While there, she learned a lot about physics, chemistry and maths. She spent her career conducting experiments that led to the discovery of chemical elements. She was also the first person to use an x-ray machine to look at the human body. She earned two Nobel Prizes for her work.
Nobel Prizes are given out every year to people who have done something extraordinary in six specific fields of study - Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Peace, and Economics.
For this activity, please follow this link to view the list of Nobel Prize winners, choose one, read about them and then share your learning on your blog.
On your blog, tell your readers who you chose and then tell us about them in five to ten sentences. Who were they? What did they do that was so special? Feel free to include a picture of your chosen Nobel Prize winner on your blog.

*Please check out the Eye-Catching Blog Posts page for ideas!
I have chosen Malala Yousifzai. She is the youngest Noble Prize winners and she got it under the peace section if that makes any sense. She got it because she believed that women should also have the right education and she was an activist. She also wrote a book and she was recocnized when she wrote a little blog about how her life was which then got posted on BBC. Then, a new york times journalist made a documentry and she got known. At the age of 9, she got the international children's peace prize. She also got shot in the head when she was on a BUS by one of the taliban and she was unconcious. She then got better and then she became an activist for womens and childrens education. In 2016, she then won the Peace Noble Prize.
Here is the 2nd activity!
Activity 2: iMoko [4 points]
Dr Lance O’Sullivan is a Māori doctor who lives in Kaitaia, Northland. He has committed his life to improving the health and well-being of both his patients and people in the local community. In 2014 he was named New Zealander of the Year.
Together, Lance and his wife, Tracy, have started some very cool projects in New Zealand including affordable clinics, the Kāinga Ora (healthy homes) initiative and the MOKO Foundation. The MOKO Foundation provides healthcare for students in school-based clinics. He has also started iMOKO, a digital initiative (programme) whereby people living in communities without doctors, can take photos of health issues and send them to doctors in Kaitaia. The doctors look at the photos, provide advice and can send a script to the local pharmacy so that the patient can get medicine. This programme is improving the health and well-being of people living in rural Northland.
For this activity please think about your own health and well-being (hauora). What do you, or those in your family, do to stay healthy?
On your blog, share five things that you do to stay healthy and strong.
I try to eat lots of fruit and vegetables and get plenty of sleep each night.
I will just do it here!
What my family and I do to stay fit and healthy are...
1- We get enough sleep! Sleep is very important so we always get our 8 hours of sleep that is needed every night.
2- Stay hydrated! This is very important because we need to saty hydrated, that is why I gave myself a goal of have at least, one glass of water, every hour. When I am awake!
3- Eat healthy! We eat healthy and we only have treats like pizza and fish'n'chips like once in a while so we don't have it often.
4- Exercize and stay fit! If we aren't exercize at all, then our health won't be the very best. My mum and I have planned that we would get up, early in the morning and go for a run together.
5- I can't think of something else because those are the main things. But something else I do which kind of goes under number 4, is that we go to the park often and I try to play some sports  while we are at the park. I also play in the playground and use the monkey bars and things to do cool tricks and to stenghthin my arms.
Here is the 3rd activity!
Activity 3: Putting Our Heads Together [6 points]
Health is a complex and complicated topic. Most people believe that there are many dimensions (areas) of health - physical health, social health, mental health, emotional health, etc. Mental health is an area that is not often discussed. It is basically the way we think and feel about ourselves and the world around us. Sometimes our mental health can be affected by things that have happened in our lives, or by changes in our brains that we cannot control.
Here in New Zealand, people like Mike King and John Kirwan have made the choice to speak publicly about the mental health challenges that they face. Overseas, people like The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, have joined the discussion about mental health and, like John and Mike, started a foundation to support people struggling with mental health challenges.
John Kirwan started the John Kirwan Foundation in 2018. Mike King founded The Key to Life Foundation, the I Am Hope and the Gumboot Friday campaigns while the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge started the Heads Together foundation in 2017. In each case, these foundations serve an important role in the community.
For this activity, we would like you to imagine that John Kirwan, Mike King and/or the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge called you up and asked you to design a new poster for their organisation. You could use Google Draw to help design your poster.
On your blog, post a final copy of your poster and include a description of the poster. What is on the poster? Why did you include the pictures or words that you did? The more that you can tell us about your design, the better!
*Remember to attribute any images that you borrow from the internet or from other people.

That is it for today, I hope you enjoyed! If you have any questions, then please ask! Otherwise, until next time, goodbye!

My name is Nadia and I am from Hornby High School. I am commenting on students posts for the SLJ. This is an incredible post with heaps of information, I am blown away by all of the effort you have put into this post! You have done an awesome job of creating your poster and it looks very good. Have you been enjoying the SLJ so far? What is your favourite activity that you have done?
Next time do you think you could put each activity on each blog post. Sometimes it can be a lot to read for some readers to read when they see a lot of words. I can see all of the obvious effort you have put into this blog post. But I think it would be easier for the viewers to understand. You have done a great job but I think this would be easier for your viewers.

Congratulations on another great blog post! Keep up the amazing work,
I hope to see a reply or two from you!
    Until next time,
    - Nadia :)

    1. Hello Nadia, thank you so much for commenting on my blog!

I am really enjoying the Summer Learning Journey so far because all of the activities are different from eahc other apart from the ones you do where you have to choose a changemaker. I have also learnt a lot as well.

Today is the 19th day and tomorow is the last day so I think I might just do the same or I might listen to your advice. I would have to see tomorow!

Thanks for taking your time and commenting on my blog,
      Parwin

  2. Hey Parwin!

I'm Natasha and I'm going to be having a geeze at your blog over the next few weeks and trying to give you some helpful feedback! So far, my mind is blown!

This post is exceptional. The extent you've gone to and the amount of effort you've put into this post is amazing. I love the immense amount of detail, you're inclusion of images - everything!

If you wanted to go a step further, you could embed youtube videos into your post which relate to the activities - this would draw more attention to your posts!

Is there any particular reason why you chose to do activity 1 on Malala Yousifzai?

Awesome work Parwin, have a great day and I look forward to seeing more astounding posts from you :)

    1. Hello Natasha, thank you so much for commenting on my blog!

Since tomrow is the last day, I will try and make it the best and make it have the best visuals. If I can find videos that give information about that, then I will also add them too!

I had heard of Malala and so I decided to find more information and her story about how she and her friend got shot on the bus kind of caught my attention.

Thanks for taking your time and commenting on my blog,
      Parwin
