Summer Learning Journey Day 11

Hey there, I'm back!
And today, my blog post is going to be about the Summer Learning Journey Day 11 or week 3 day 1!
I am super excited because it is almost over but that means that the holidays are also almost over. (Sniff, sniff) Anyways here are the activities that we had to do for today, here is the first activity!
New Zealand is a pretty lovely place to live, isn’t it? Apparently, New Zealand (NZ) is also a pretty lovely place to visit. In 2017 approximately 2-3 million people came to visit NZ as tourists. Some of them chose to come in the middle of our summer, while others braved it and came in the middle of winter! When do you think is the best time of year (season) to visit NZ?
If you would like some help making a decision, feel free to read the Go New Zealand website. It has lots of information about the seasons in NZ!
I, personally, encourage my friends and family from overseas to come and visit NZ in early spring. The weather is usually warm and dry and the tourist attractions, beaches and holiday spots are less busy than they are in the middle of summer.
On your blog, tell us what time of year you think is best for tourists for come and visit. Be sure to share at least three things that tourists could do while they were here in NZ.
I think that its best to come when it is the early spring because that time it is a nice weather and it isn't too crowded at places and everywhere, there are flower blooming everywhere and the weather isn't too hot or too cold because it is just right.
Here is the second activity!
People in New Zealand love spending time outdoors. Unfortunately, the sun is very powerful and the rates of skin cancer are incredibly high in New Zealand. In fact, they are higher than anywhere else in the entire world! To protect ourselves against skin cancer, we need to be careful about how much time we spend in the sun. We have to be ‘Sunsmart.’

Read the Sunsmart website.

On your blog, list five different things that we can do to protect ourselves from the sun this summer!
You could use sun screen and apply it 20 minutes before you go outside and wear clothes that have sleeves. Wear brimmed hats so that it protects your face head and neck. You could stay under some shade and maybe take an umbrella with you whenever you go somewhere so you have some shade. Wear glasses to protect your eyes and make sure you put sunscreen on your legs, arms, face, ears and neck.
Here is what we had to do for the last activity!
While it can get hot in New Zealand, especially in the middle of summer, it gets even hotter in places like Dallol (Ethiopia), Dasht-e Loot (Iran), Tirat Zvi (Israel), Kabili (Tunisia) and Bandar-e Mahshahr (Iran).
The hottest temperature on record in each place is: Dallol: 41oC; Dasht-e Loot: 71oC; Tirat Zvi: 54oC; Kabili: 55oC; Bandar-e Mahshahr: 51oC. Crazy ‘eh?!
For this activity, you are asked to use this information to create a graph. The graph should have a title along with the names of each city and their hottest recorded temperatures. You can draw the graph by hand or use a computer programme like Google Draw to create your graph. It’s completely up to you!

Summer Learning Journey Day 10

Hey bloggers, I'm back!
As you can tell by the title, today is the tenth day of the Summer Learning Journey, which means there is only another ten days left which isn't even much. I think I have been making good progress so far because I have been doing the activities daily and making sure I complete them. Anyways, here is what we had to do for the second activity!
Fishing is a really common activity in New Zealand. In fact, people have fished in New Zealand for centuries. Unfortunately, over the past few decades some people have caught too many fish in one area and left the region without enough fish to refill (replenish) the stocks. When this happens we call the area ‘overfished’ and it is closed to all private and commercial fishing. If people are caught fishing in these areas, they are required to pay a fine (money). The maximum fine for fishing in a restricted area is $100 000.
What do you think about this rule? Is it fair that people are charged up to $100 000 for overfishing?
On your blog, tell us what you think about this rule and why you think it!
I think that they have the right to fine someone who fishes in that area because if they don't then all of the fish will disappear in just a blink of an eye! But then 100,000 is too much, like maybe 1,000 or something is fine but then 100,000 is way to much, so I think that they should make the charges less.
Here is what you have to do for the second activity!
Approximately two-thirds of all rivers and one-half of all lakes in New Zealand are too polluted to swim in, according to a recent article in an online newspaper. One of the most polluted is the Tarawera River in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand. Pollution enters the river from a local pulp and paper mill, from local farms and through the local sewage system. Many other rivers in New Zealand are also polluted with waste from businesses and farms.
Use Google to help you find two other polluted rivers in New Zealand.

On your blog, tell us:
1) The names of the rivers.2) The location of the rivers.3) What is being done to clean up the rivers (if anything).
I did it on Pikto Chart but for some reason it wont upload and all of my work was deleted.

But anyways here is the last activity!
The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system, made up of 2900 individual reefs. It is so big that it can actually be seen from space! The reef is located on the east coast of Australia and many people believe that it is millions and millions of years old. For most of its life, the reef has been a healthy, vibrant ecosystem. Over the past thirty years, however, it has changed dramatically. Much of the beautiful bright coral has become bleached and has lost its colour. Sections of the reef have also been damaged by tourists, cyclones and the introduction of new, damaging invasive species.
The Australian government is working to protect and preserve the reef. Each year they spend about $200 million dollars repairing and protecting the reef. It is a lot of money and they could really use some help raising the money (funds) required to repair the reef. This is where you come in!
On your blog, list three different ideas or strategies for raising funds to preserve the Great Barrier Reef. What could you do to fundraise here in New Zealand?
I think we could sell things like shirts with messages on making the great barrier reef healthier. And I think that we have like bake sells and sausage sizzles and things.

Summer Learning Journey Day 9

Hey bloggers, I'm back!
Today, my blog post is going to be about the Summer Learning Journey. Today is the 9th day or the 4 day of the second week and there is only 15 days of the Summer Learning Journey and we are done with it and then they announce the winners, yay! I am really excited!
So here is what we have to do for the first activity!
Arguably, one of the most dramatic and spectacular (beautiful) places to visit in New Zealand is Milford Sound. It has been referred to as the ‘eighth wonder of the world.’ It is a beautiful fiord (steep valley) that was formed when big pieces of ice (glaciers) melted. The melted glaciers created a beautiful river that is surrounded by dramatic cliffs and snow-capped mountains. People who visit Milford Sound are able to take a boat cruise through the middle of the fiord, walk around the area on the Milford Track or fly above the fiord as part of a private helicopter tour.
Let’s imagine that you had the chance to visit Milford Sound by boat, foot (walking) or air (helicopter). Which option would you prefer?
On your blog tell us which of the three options you would take to explore Milford Sound. Be sure to tell us why you have chosen this option.

I think that I would choose a private helicopter because you can go really high up and look from the very top and see what it looks like. If you went on a boat, it would take long and you see everything. If you walk, then you can't go to the steep places and you will get tired quickly too.

Here is what we have to do for the second activity!
Activity 2: It’s All in the Name [4 points]
Rotorua is one of New Zealand’s most popular tourist destinations. It is a city filled with incredible forests, mountain biking tracks, lakes, and geothermal wonders, including hot springs (geysers) and mud pools. One of the most famous geothermal pools is called the Devil’s Bath at Wai-o-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. It is a neon green pool of stinky water.
Over the years, people have suggested that we come up with a new name for the pool. What do you think we should call it? Take a minute to let your creative juices flow.
On your blog, give us a list of three to five options for the name of this geothermal pool. Put a star (*) beside the name that you like the most.
Green fog lake*
Kiwi Lake
Tourist Lake?

Here is what we have to do for the last activity!
While New Zealand is home to some beautiful waterfalls, there are a number of stunning waterfalls in places like Canada and South Africa. In Canada, the largest waterfall is called Niagara Falls. It sits on the border between Canada and the United States of America. Thousands of tourists flock (go) to Niagara Falls every year to see the falls and to have their picture taken in front of this natural wonder. Over the past few years people have started taking ‘selfies’ and posting them online. Do you ever take selfies?
For this activity, choose one of the following three selfies. From left to right: Selfie #1,   Selfie #2,   Selfie #3

On your blog, write a short story about what you think is happening in the picture. Be sure to tell us where you think the people are and what you think they were doing at the time that they stopped to pose for the selfie. To earn full points, the story must be 8 – 10 sentences long.

In this picture, the women is taking a selfie, she looks like she is about to fall off and the picture turned out to be great! But she fell backwards while trying to get a good shot, but she didn't get hurt at all but she just got her clothes stained. What colour do you think she got her clothes stained? Well she got it a range of colours because she didn't really go there, it was just a picture she painted and took a selfie in front of it to make it look like she is traveling the world, when really, she is just at the garage. Because that is where she paints her background and takes selfies to make people think that she is traveling the world and having a blast where really, all she is doing is painting and then taking a selfie

Summer Leraning Journey day 8

Hey bloggers, I'm back!
As usual, my blog post is going to be about the Summer Learning Journey activities. Today is the 3rd day of the second week or the 8th day of the Summer Learning Journey. I think that I am making good progress so far because I have been completing all of the activities. Here is the activities that we have to do for today!

Here is the first activity!
Here in New Zealand we have many amazing and unique sea creatures, including penguins. The blue penguin, or kororā, is particularly special because it is the smallest penguin in the entire world! Blue penguins are typically found on the east coast of the South Island in places like Oamaru but they can be hard to spot as they rarely leave the water. If they do come onto land it is usually at night, when most of us are sound asleep! That’s because they are nocturnal. Not all of us, however, sleep all night. In fact, some people love to stay awake late into the evening. People who like to stay up late are called ‘night owls.’ Are you a night owl or are you an early riser, like me? I typically wake up every day around 6:00 a.m. and jump out of bed, ready to start the day!
On your blog, tell us whether you are a night owl or an early riser. Then, tell us about the rest of your family. Are they the same as you? .
I think that I am a night owl because I usually wake up around 7:30 when there is school and where there isn't I usually wake up around 9. My parents are the same as me but sometimes they wake up earlier than me. My sisters sometimes wake up really early and sometimes they wake up late. My older brother wakes up later than all of us so someone has to wake him up for breakfast and my younger brother usually wakes up the same time as me but a bit later.

Here is what we have to do for the second activity!
Whitebait is a very special fish in New Zealand. It is rumoured (believed) to be a very delicious fish. Some restaurants in New Zealand make dishes that feature whitebait, including whitebait fritters. Have you ever tried whitebait fritters? They are a favourite dish of many of my friends. I, personally, prefer foods from places like Mexico and Italy. Pizza and nachos are two of my all-time favourite foods! In fact, I often make homemade pizza with Aronui on Friday nights using the same ingredients (pizza base, tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, chicken, red onion, basil and feta cheese) each time.

For this activity, please choose a favourite food and find a recipe for it.

On your blog, share a list of the ingredients that you need to make this food. You must type out the list of ingredients yourself (and not simply copy and paste it from a website) to earn full points.
My favourite food is Macaroni except I add some extra things in it, here are the ingredients you will be needing.
1-Macaroni/spaghetti
2-Tomatoe paste
3-Canned Tomatoes
4-Onions
5-Curry Powder
6-Potatoe
7-Oil

You will also be needing 2 posts, one smaller and one bigger. The smaller one is for making the flavoring in and the big one is for the macaroni/spaghetti to get softer and to be cooked in.
Here is the last activity! Hope you enjoy!
Let’s imagine that the average adult can lift 25 kg and the average child can lift 15 kg. How many adults and children will it take to move the giant squid into its new room at Te Papa? [Note: There is more than one right answer to this question.]
On your blog, tell us how you will solve this maths problem. You can write your answer in words, use a Sketchpad image or post a video explaining how you would figure it out. Be sure to give us your final answer.

Summer Learning Journey Day 7

Hey bloggers, I'm back!
Today is the second day of the second week or the 7th day of the Summer Learning Journey!
The first activity that we have to do today is this!
There is a long history in New Zealand of collecting natural plants, including flax (harakeke), and using them to create cloaks, baskets (kete), mats, traps and ropes. Flax weaving is an art form. It can take years for people to perfect the art of weaving. Have you ever tried it?
For this activity, you are asked to watch a short video of someone weaving a fish (ika) out of flax.
On your blog, tell us whether or not you would like to try flax weaving. Does it interest you? Why or why not?
I have tried weaving once before and I think that it is a cool thing to do because you make mistakes and it might not turn out into what you wanted it to be but it turned into something else. I want to try more weaving and make new things out of the flax. It does interest me because I kind of do sewing designs at home, so I think that if I try doing weaving more, I would sort of be used to it.
For the second activity, we have to think of someone of a character who is strong and tough like the Kiwi Mangrove which is a very tough tree that can be found I Northland and Auckland. I think that I would pick Moana because she was very tough and strong to save everyone even though she had to stay at the island and lead people, she knew that everybody was in danger so she saved everyone. She didn't even know how to sail the boat but she learnt from her mistakes. Moana is the Chiefs daughter and she was meant to lead everyone that was on the island.

Here is the bonus activity, hope you enjoy!
When I was reading the list about the plants and I think that the most weirdest ones were probably Wilwitschia Mirabilis and Hydnellem Pickii. The difference between them is that the first plant grows in a desert and the second plant grows in North America and Europe. The first plant is a dry plant and the second one produces this blood like juice. Something simular is that they are both rare!
Here are some photos!

Summer Learning journey day 1 week 2

Hey there bloggers, I'm back!
Today is the 1st Day of week 2 of the Summer Learning Journey. I thin that I am making good progress so at because  am doing all the activities to the standard that I can. I hope you enjoy my work that I have been doing, here is the first activity that we had to do!

In New Zealand we have many beautiful beaches and stunning waterfalls. One of the most spectacular waterfalls is called Kitekite and it is located in Piha, a small village west of Auckland. Tourists and locals flock to Piha during the summer season to enjoy the waterfall, the local beach, and the great surf. Have you ever tried surfing? Although I have never surfed many of my friends have and they absolutely love it. In fact, it is their favourite summer activity! What is yours?
For this activity, please take a picture of yourself doing one of your favourite summer activities. It could be anything! Here is a picture of one of our team members (Laura) doing one of her favourite summer activities.
I think that my favourite summer activity is probably exploring new places and surfing. I do a lot of exploring but not so much of Surfing. In fact, I have only been Surfing once and that was from school and I really enjoyed it and I want to go surfing another time. I like Surfing because its a really fun activity to do and its something that is tricky and first and you sort of have to keep practising until you can surf like pro. I like exploring because I learn about new things and its fun too because of the scenery and you can take good photo's too! Here are some photo's!
For the second activity we have to do this!
Every year approximately 7500 people arrive in Taupo, New Zealand to compete in a one-day cycling race around Lake Taupo. The race route is 160 km in length. Participants can choose to compete in the full race or the half-race (80 km). Let’s imagine that you were given a free ticket to compete in the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge next year and you were able to bring three people with you as your ‘support crew.’ Who would you bring with you?
If it was me, I would choose my son, Aronui, as one of my supporters because he’s really funny and energetic. I think that he would make sure that I had a great time and that I spent the entire day laughing and smiling. I would also choose my sister, Leigh, because she is very strong and fast. Thirdly, I would choose my co-leader, Hazel, because she is very organised and would make sure that we followed the trail and didn’t get lost!
On your blog, list the three people you would like to have on your Lake Taupo Cycle Race Support Crew. Tell us why you have chosen each person.
I think that if I got to bring 3 people I would bring my Mum, Dad and Jedi. I would bring my Mum and Dad because they have always been there when I felt nervous and the same for Jedi because she is an amazing friend and I think they would give me more motivation too!
For the bonus activity we have to of this!

On your blog, write out each fact and in CAPITAL LETTERS beside the fact, write the word ‘TRUE’ if it is a true fact or ‘FALSE’ if it is not true.
True or False?

Summer Learning Journey Day 5

Hey there bloggers, I'm back!
Today my blog is about the summer learning journey and today is the 5th day f the first week! I think that I ma making good progress with the summer learning journey. For today's activity, we have to write reasons why we dis/agree with loggers. Loggers are people or cut tree's and make them into other things.

What do you think about logging? Should it be aloud? Or should it be banned? Well, agree with both. Because if we don't cut down some tree's and turn them into other stuff like paper, then we won't have that. Tree's do not only make paper, but they can make other useful stuff like houses, or other wooden materials. But then we also need to stop cutting tree's because all of our tree's are getting cut and leaving a tree less space where there used to be beautiful big trees with braches where now is just some pile of dirt. What do you think?

For the second activity we have to do this:
While it can get quite cold in New Zealand, it rarely drops below freezing (00C). Most of the time the temperature in New Zealand is pretty mild. This is not the case in the tundra. The tundra is an area of land (biome) that is cold, dry and completely treeless. Did you know that the average temperature in the tundra is -280C?
Over the past few years, however, the temperature in the tundra has been rising and the weather has been changing. Let’s imagine that your teacher decides to take you on a class trip to the tundra before the weather changes too much and you aren’t able to go.
On your blog, write a letter to your best friend or a family member telling them about your trip to the tundra. To earn full points your letter must have a greeting (eg. Dear…) followed by 5 – 6 sentences of information about what your experience.
Dear Jedi,
The trip to Tundra was great except it was very hot on the day and I didn't bring much water, I forgot we were going on Wednesday, because I thought that it was Tuesday since I didn't come to school Monday. I was very thirsty but the view was amazing! I had lot's of fun except I was very thirsty because it was a very hot place. I was dripping with sweat all day long, if there was a lake there, I would jump in it no matter how cold it was or how hot it was. It would probably be hot because it is a hot place but then it can be cold because you never know what the weather is going to be like. I wish  knew we where going so I could bring a camera or something to take photos of the fantastic view. Hopefully we go again, it was lot's of fun! We should go together, don't you think?

Kind regards, Parwin

Here is what we have to do for the bonus activity!
Over the years, scientists have made some surprising discoveries. One of
these discoveries is that we have entire cities (e.g. Jakarta, Indonesia and Venice, Italy) that are slowly sinking into the ocean. Scientists believe that, one day, the cities will disappear completely under the water. Yikes!
Some of the residents (people living in the cities) have taken pictures of their neighbourhoods and written stories about their lives in order to make a record of what ‘life was like’ in their city before it disappeared.
Let’s imagine that New Zealand was going to sink to the bottom of the ocean next week (Eek!). Before it sinks you are asked to write a blog post telling people what life was like in New Zealand in 2018.
On your blog, post a description of life in New Zealand in 2018. Please remember that the people who read your post will have never been to New Zealand or even seen a picture so it is your job to ‘paint a picture’ of New Zealand using your words. You can also post pictures, if you wish. Be sure to fully attribute the pictures.

New Zealand is a wonderful place for living, there are beautiful places and animals. Wonderful places and walking trails, there are many places you can go to from the North Island to South. Ever place is like treasure, a valuable place. Every city or place is perfect for you, whether you prefer a flat place or a mountain place. I have been to a couple of places and I think that Christchurch is the best place because there are shops everywhere and you don't have to drive that much to reach to the stores, in fact, you can just walk there! New Zealand is truly and wonder place to live and I am sure that you will love New Zealand if you come here, how you been to New Zealand?
