SLJ- 12

Hello Bloggers, I'm back and at it again!
Today is the 12th day of the Summer Learning Journey and also the holidays! If you don't know what the Summer Learning Journey is then keep reading, otherwise, skip to the next paragraph! So the Summer Learning Journey happens through out the summer holidays and the reason why we should do it is because we spend all that time in school learning but when we have the holidays, we forget about everything because we are having so much fun! Then we have what is called a Summer Slump which kind of shows how your learning was, before and after the holidays. The reason why we should do it is so we don't forget everything we learnt but we also learn new things! If you come 1st, 2nd or 3rd, out of your school, then you win awesome prizes but if you come 1st out of your cluster you win a Chromebook or many other cool prizes! I think its worth it!

Each day, there are 2 main activities which are both worth 4 points and then there is a main activity which is worth 6 points. If you complete all of them, then you get 14 points in total! Each comment or reply you do as well is 2 points each! Okay, lets get started! This is what I have to do for the first activity!
Activity 1: Through Careful Observation [4 points]
There are many incredible people in history who have changed the world. Some have changed what we know about the world and about how it works. We often call these people ‘scientists’ or ‘theorists.’ Famous scientists include Sir Isaac NewtonCharles DarwinAlbert EinsteinKatherine FreeseMaria Goeppert Mayer and Sau Lan Wu.
Each of these scientists came up with a new theory (idea) about how things work. Much of what they discovered came from observing (watching) things closely.
For this activity, we would like you to select one of the pictures below and to study or observe it closely. What do you see?
On your blog, describe the painting in detail. What do you see when you look at it? Please give us as much detail as you can!

I have chosen  the first one!
I studied the pcture and I can see that they are kind of pararell because you can see birds flying in the sky, one of them are a darker colour and one is a lighter colour. The side which you can see the black coloured birds, the background is like white but it is the opposite on the other side. I can also see that on each side, there is a path way which is the same colour as the birds, depending on which side they are on.
Here is the second activity!
Activity 2: Overcoming Adversity [4 points]
Stephen Hawking (1942-2018) was an English scientist who was interested in studying the origin (beginning) of the universe. When he was just 21 years old, he was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease and, over time, he lost the ability to walk and talk. He needed to use a wheelchair to move around and a computer to help him to talk. The computer made his voice sound a bit funny but, most importantly, it meant he could still communicate with people.
Despite his diagnosis, Stephen Hawking lived a long and very productive life. He showed great determination and perseverance because he didn’t let his physical challenges stop him. He didn’t quit. Instead, he ‘overcame the odds’ and achieved a huge amount in his life.
For this activity, we would like to hear about a time when you, or someone you know, experienced a challenge and overcame it.
On your blog, recount a time when you or someone you know experienced a challenge and overcame it.
I have a good friend who moved to NZ three years ago as a refugee from Myanmar. She had been living in Thailand for many years as it was not safe for her to live in Myanmar. When she moved to NZ she couldn’t speak English. Now, she speaks English really well and she had just passed her driver’s licence! I’m so proud of her!
I am proud of my mother because when I was young and we had just moved here from Afghanistan, she found everything very different. I remember that I used to go to her school and she would learn, while I played with the other kids. When the big earthquake happened, the school was damamged and she could no longer go. Her english was really good that time but then after that, she didn't have any time. She needed to take me and my older brother to school and my dad was working that time. My mother then had my brother and she was too busy, so she couldn't go to school that time eaither. 3 or 4 years later, we moved to to my new house which I currently live in. There were no schools which were near that she could go to. My mums learning was fadig away but she kept trying and although she forgot most of the stuff she learnt, she is still trying and her english is still very good.
Here is the last activity!
Activity 3: Hidden Figures [6 points]

Ada Lovelace, born in 1815, is considered to be the ‘first computer programmer’, even though computers had not yet been invented. She was called a computer programmer because she worked out a series of algorithms (instructions) that a machine could use to compute (calculate) difficult maths questions.
Katherine Johnson was another brilliant mathematician who worked with NASA - the North American Space Association. NASA was responsible for sending rockets and people into space. It was Katherine’s job to check all of the calculations that the engineers and astronauts used when designing the spacecraft and flying them into space. In 2016, a movie was made about Katherine Johnson and the other women who worked at NASA during this time. It is called ‘Hidden Figures.’ In the movie, the women had to learn how to do basic coding when NASA started using computers.
Have you ever tried coding?
For this activity we would like you to give coding a try. Click on the link for the website: code.org. If you try an activity and it is too easy, try a harder level!
On your blog, post a screenshot of your completed shape. Underneath the shape tell us what you thought of the coding app. Is it good? Why/why not?

I'm not a coding expert but I prefer using this other coding website which I think was called hopscotch because I used it at tech and I created a crossy road game but that was a long time ago though. Anyways, here is what I did and I did enjoy it overall! I think that it was really good because everything was easy to use and it also had insturctions as well so I knew what to do.

That is it for today, I hope you enjoyed! If you have any questions, then please ask! Otherwise, until next time, goodbye!

  1. Hey Parwin,

Great work on completing another Summer Learning Journey activity - keep up the good work. Don’t forget to comment back to blog commenters as well as on others SLJ blog posts to gain extra points.

Sounds like your Mum is a very courageous and persistent woman. Moving to a new country with 2 children and not knowing english would be very hard and a bit scary if you ask me. I think your Mum is very brave for doing so. I am glad that she didn't lose all that she had learnt when she went to school.
Do you think you could help her to learn more english? You would be a great teacher.

Well done on creating your shape using the coding website. It can be tricky trying to do it using a different website especially when you have learnt on another. Do you think you'd like to learn more about coding?

Until next time, happy blogging :)

    1. Hey Emma, thank you so much for commenting on my blog!

Yeah, when I first came here, I was pretty nervous about going to school but it was easy for me to learn english. I do help her and when she doesn't understand something, I explain it to her in farsi. Yeah, I would be a great teacher but I don't think being a teacher would be one of my job that I would want to have. Teaching is fun but I wanted to be that for my whole life.

I would like to learn more and learn how to code my own game, like a tricky game because it would be a fun experience.

Thanks for taking your time and commenting on my blog,
      Parwin

  2. Hey Parwin,

    Me again. :)

You've written a great little analysis of your chosen painting but unfortunately the images on your post aren't showing up. Is there a way you can edit it so your readers can see the pictures?

Thanks Parwin. Have a great day! :)

    Bye for now,

    Mikey
