SLJ- 2!

Hey bloggers, I'm back and at it again!
Today is the 2nd day of the holidays and also the second day of the Summer Learning Journey. If you don't know what the Summer Learning Journey is then keep reading but if you do then go on the next paragraph! So basically the Summer Learning Journey is something you do through out the summer holidays. The reason why you should do it is because if you do it, then your learning stays the same but if you don't do it, then you have the Summer Slump. If you come 1st, 2nd or 3rd out of your school, then you win awesome prizes but if you come 1st out of your cluster, then you win an awesome prize like a Chromebook or much more!

Okay so today if of course the second day as I said but I am going to be completing the activities for today. For each day, there are 2 activities which are both worth 4 points so that is 8 points plus a bonus which is worth 6 points if you do it. That is 14 points if you do complete all of them. If you write a comment on others peoples blogs as well, then you earn 2 points for each one if it is a positive, thoughtful and helpful comment. Here are the activities for today!

Jean Batten was a famous aviator (pilot) who was born in Rotorua, New Zealand in 1909. In the 1930s she made several record-breaking solo flights (on her own) across the world. In fact, she was the first person to fly solo from England to New Zealand - a huge achievement! She also flew a number of long solo flights between England and Australia/Brazil. When she flew, she always took a silk dress with her so that she could look beautiful at the parties she attended upon her arrival.
Amelia Earhart was an American aviator who lived at about the same time as Jean Batten. Like Jean, she also flew solo. In fact, she was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She flew all the way from Canada to Northern Ireland on her own without stopping. In 1937, Amelia Earhart attempted to circumnavigate (go right around) the world. Unfortunately, the flight ended in tragedy when she disappeared near Howland Island, about halfway between Australia and Hawaii. She was never found. For this activity, compare and contrast these two aviators. You could use this venn diagram.
On your blog, share your comparison between the two women and be sure to include at least three similarities and three differences between these two aviators.

I found some information and I have made it on Google Drawings!

Here is what I had to do for the second activity!

Neil Armstrong was an American astronaut and engineer. In 1969, Neil and his team of astronauts flew to the moon in a spacecraft called Apollo 11. When they arrived, Neil got out of the spacecraft and walked on the moon. He is the first person in history to walk on the moon! As Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon, he famously said, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
As you can imagine, landing on the moon is a very dangerous task. Many things can go wrong, and a number of astronauts have died attempting to land on the moon. Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins (the three astronauts on Apollo 11) must have been extremely brave.
I always imagine that walking on the moon must be like jumping on the trampoline! Do you like jumping on a trampoline? My daughter Laila loves it!

For this activity, let’s imagine that you were Neil Armstrong.
On your blog, write a short poem describing how you felt when you first set foot on the moon. Here is a link to some different poetry forms.

Here is my Poem!

Here is the bonus activity!

Mr Chesley Sullenberger, or “Sully” as he was known, was an airline captain (pilot) for about 30 years. In 2009, he became world famous when he landed his aeroplane in the middle of the Hudson River in New York City. He was forced to make an emergency landing when both of the engines in his aeroplane lost power. Amazingly, all 155 people on board the A320 plane survived the landing. This incredible event became known as the ‘Miracle on the Hudson.’
You can watch a video about it here.
Although Sully must have been scared when the engines lost power, he didn’t show it. Instead he stayed calm, and saved the lives of everyone on board. What a brave man!
For this activity, we would like to hear about a time when you, or someone you know, was brave like Sully.
On your blog, recount a time when you (or someone else you know) did something brave.

I'll just do it here!

At the moment, I can't really think of something like there are some small things but I'm trying to think of things that are big but some small things are just basically trying new things. Something brave that my mum did was when I think we went to Alexander or something but there was this place and to get there, we had to walk across this bridge which was like super high! Even I got a bit scared. My mum, does not like height's at all so at first, she didn't really want to walk across it. The bridge was not like a short one because it was a pretty long bridge! My mum was then brave enough to walk across it. Something small that I did was a long time ago, maybe when I was around 6, 7 or 8 but I was in Afghanistan and there are wolves but I had to go to where my uncle and cousins were and it wasn't even that far but it was really dark outside and I was scared because a wolves might just come out all of a sudden. I stood by the door and although I did want to go, I was really scared but then I quickly ran, all by myself and I went to where my cousins were.

That is it for today, I hope you enjoyed! If you have any questions then please ask! Otherwise, until next time, goodbye!

Mikey here! I'm not sure if you remember me but I work with Emma on the Summer Learning Journey programme and I'm pretty sure I commented on some of your blog posts from last year! :) It's so great to see that you're participating in the programme again.

Wow Parwin! I can tell that you've put a lot of time and effort into this post - amazing work! :) I really like how you've explained what each activity is about before delving into completing it. Some people who read your blog posts might not have heard of the Summer Learning Journey before so it's super helpful to provide a bit of background information. :)

You've included some really interesting information about Jean Batten and Amelia Earhart in your post. Wouldn't it be interesting to read their flight diaries?! Imagine all the wonderful things they saw on their travels! I just read on another learner's blog post that Amelia was only 12 years old when she learned to fly a plane - how amazing is that?! Did you enjoy learning about Amelia and Jean?

Have a wonderful day, Parwin. Keep up the incredible blogging! :)

    Mā te wā,

    Mikey

    1. Hello Mikey, thank you for taking your time and writing a wonderful comment!

Thank you for the awesome comment! I kind of remember you but that was a long time ago! I kind of did the same thing like last year like the layout and everything because some people do separate posts but I do it in one. I also include some background information because like you said, some people might have not heard of the Summer Learning Journey so its best if I kind of explain it to them.

It would defiantly be interesting to read their diaries and see what they saw, maybe they even saw some strange or mysterious things, who knows! It is very surprising and very impressive of Amelia Earhart to learn how to fly a plane at such a young age. I wish I could do that! I did enjoy learning about them as some of the facts which I find out were pretty exciting!

Although, I do wonder what happened Amelia Earhart, what do you think might have happened?

Again, I would like to thank you for the positive feedback,
      Parwin

  3. Hello Parvin ,
Its me Alan. I did not know you was in the summer learning journey.

Excellent job Parvin and a very catchy title. I really liked how you made the photo.

This reminds me of when I did this.

If you want to improve maybe you can write less because most people will not comment you if you write more.
    Awesome work!
Looking forward to your next posts,
    Kind regards
    Alan

    1. Hello Alan, thanks for commenting on my blog!

Thank you, I spent some time thinking about how to present it and how it would match.

I will try to keep it more simple but I do need to explain the things so I don't think 'm writing too much.

Thanks for taking your time and writing a positive comment,
      Parwin
