SLJ- 18!

Hello Bloggers, I'm back and at it again!
Today is the 18th day of the Summer Learning Journey and also the holidays! If you don't know what the Summer Learning Journey is then keep reading, otherwise, skip to the next paragraph! So the Summer Learning Journey happens through out the summer holidays and the reason why we should do it is because we spend all that time in school learning but when we have the holidays, we forget about everything because we are having so much fun! Then we have what is called a Summer Slump which kind of shows how your learning was, before and after the holidays. The reason why we should do it is so we don't forget everything we learnt but we also learn new things! If you come 1st, 2nd or 3rd, out of your school, then you win awesome prizes but if you come 1st out of your cluster you win a Chromebook or many other cool prizes! I think its worth it!

Each day, there are 2 main activities which are both worth 4 points and then there is a main activity which is worth 6 points. If you complete all of them, then you get 14 points in total! Each comment or reply you do as well is 2 points each! Okay, lets get started! This is what I have to do for the first activity!
Activity 1: Talk Show Host [4 points]
Oprah Winfrey is a bit of a television legend! She is best known for her talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show which ran for 25 years. Some people have said that she is one of the most influential women in the world. She is certainly very successful and has spent a lot of time helping others.
Like so many others, Oprah had to work very hard for her success. She had to overcome challenges and she experienced many struggles during her life, however, she persisted and eventually became a radio presenter, TV news presenter, and daytime talk show host. She now owns her own production company (HARPO), and television station (OWN). She also produces a magazine called ‘O.’
Oprah is passionate about education. She believes in the power of learning and has even started her own school in South Africa called The Oprah Winfrey Leadership School for Girls. She is keen to provide young people with opportunities to follow their passions.
For this activity, we would love to know more about your interests (passions) and your future plans. What do you think that you would like to do when you are older? Do you have a specific job in mind?
On your blog, please tell us about your future plans (i.e. what you plan to do when you finish high school or college). Would you prefer to start working right away or to continue with your studies?

Here is what I have done!

Here is the 2nd activity!

Activity 2: Plot Points [4 points]
Lupita Nyong’o is a Mexican-Kenyan actress. She spent most of her childhood living in Kenya, Africa with her family. She is one of six children.
When she graduated from high school, she decided to move to the United States of America to follow her dreams of becoming an actress. She was cast in her first American film, East River, in 2008. She went on to write, produce and star in a number of films, including Black Panther and 12 Days a Slave, for which she won the 2013 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress (otherwise known as an ‘Oscar’). Not only did Lupita win the Oscar but she was the first ever Kenyan and/or Mexican woman to win the award. Amazing ‘eh?!
Over the past few years Lupita has continued to act, she has earned a masters degree from Yale University and has written a children’s book called Sulwe. She has also written and produced her own movies.
For this activity, imagine that you had the chance to write your own movie. What would it be about? Who would be your main characters? What are the important events that would take place?
On your blog, provide a synopsis (overview) of your movie. In particular, tell us the name of your movie, the main events that take place in your movie and the names of the main characters. If you wish, you could do this as a storyboard.
*Remember to attribute any images that you borrow from the internet or from other people.
I will just do it here!
So basically I wrote this story a few months ago at school and I thought that it would be a perfect for this and it would be cool if it was turned into a movie. Here is the story.

My alarm was glaring at me. It was 6:00am. I got out of bed and had a shower. I quickly got out and did some stretches before having some breakfast. I grabbed a bar on my way and drove to work. By the time I had done everything and got to work at 6:50. There was no time to muck around, there was a life on the line. A couple of days ago, a girl named Holly Dawson who is 16  was reported lost. She was walking home from her friends party and then she never came home. Her parents however, thought that she was staying at their house so they didn’t think of it but when she didn’t come the next day, they were scared. They called Grace’s parents to check if Holly was but they said she had left the party earlier than when it ended. They immediately reported to the police and then here I am, trying to find clues.

The figure who had hit her in the head, dropped the bat in one of the bins and they drove off. That was a clue which I must get immediately. I tell one of other workers that I had found something that can lead to the kidnapping of Holly. After I said that, I ran out of the station and drove to where Holly’s friends house was. I also had to interview Holly’s friend, Grace.

The drive wasn’t too long and when I got there, I wore gloves and looked around for anything else. I then Got the Bat and put it in a bag. There was some blood on it which would have been Holly’s and maybe it would have their fingerprints too. I took the gloves off and then went towards Graces house. I then explained that I needed to ask some questions about what happened. Turns out, she and Holly had a big argument over something at school and then she stormed off. Grace then said that she had not heard of her or receive any texts. I noted every single thing down and thanked them for their time. As I was walking towards my car, I saw a phone glistening in the sun. It was slightly cracked, I put another pair of gloves on and turned the phone on, it had a photo of Holly as the background and it also had a password too.

I drove to Holly’s parents house and asked if they knew what Holly’s password was. They did. Thank god. They asked what happened but I was not allowed to explain to them what happened. I explained to them that if we find anything then we will report it to them. I drove back to the station and it was around 12. I got there and told the chief what I had found. The chief came and watched the security footage and I gave the Bat to a Forensic DNA specialist that we had. Once the chief watched the video, we both examined through the phone. We went on her social media accounts to see if anything was Off. We then went on her messages and turns out, there was a message that was sent from an unknown number. It had a profile picture of a dark figure. The same one that was caught on the footage. I read the message and it said some pretty scary things. Then a message popped up that was just sent at that time. It just said Help. It was probably from Holly.

The strange thing, however, was the fact that they lived in a quiet and safe neighborhood so it was pretty shocking to have someone get kidnapped. I spent the whole day yesterday trying to find clues and checking the camera’s to try and gather evidence and find out what happened. An hour past but still nothing. It around 9:00 am,  I finally stumbled across something. I found the security footage of a girl, who looked like Holly, walking down the street and then a car just slowly coming out of nowhere. I already knew what was going to happen next. She got very scared and tries to act natural. She started to walk faster and when the car went another way, she started to walk even faster. Next minute, she looked behind her and saw a figure in dark clothes lurking through the shadows. By the look on her face, you could tell that panic had risen inside her as she got her phone out. She started to type but then the figure came from behind and grabbed her pulling a bag over her head. She then gets pulled and the same car comes and they attempt to put the girl in the boot. The girl kept moving around to try and release herself but then one of them hit her in the back of the head with a bat and she immediately dozed off.

My eyes opened wide and I immediately knew what was meant to happen. I rushed towards one of the other investigators and explained to them that they needed to quickly track where that number was. After some time, she found the exact place. I was expecting it to be at some type of Abandoned Warehouse, but it was somewhere just out of Christchurch. It was in the middle of nowhere, in a forest. The chief immediately got some of the police to drive there but to keep low profile. I rushed to my car and drove to where the address was.

It was 1:30 pm when we had reached our destination. The police knew what to do and they went outside while I stayed in the car. While I was in the car, I got a call from one of the Forensic DNA specialist which I had given the bat to and said that they had found some fingerprints on them. They then sent a document of the person’s fingerprint. My mouth was gaping open. It was Kevin Dawson. Her uncle. But why would he do that? Just then, I heard a scream and then a gunshot The scream was like a females scream. I eyes opened even bigger. As much as I wanted to go outside to see what was going on, I couldn’t, I wasn’t allowed to. In a couple of minutes, I saw the police coming out with a Holly and a man in handcuffs. Although not all of the police were there. I jumped out and rushed towards them and asked what had happened. Turns out that the man in the handcuffs, was only the one who had driven the car. He claims that he had been forced but we didn’t know if he was telling the truth. The real criminal, had driven off when he saw the police. Holly was found tied to a chair in a small rundowned hut. She said that her head was aching.

I told the police what I had found out while they were gone. I asked Holly again just to make sure but she said that she never saw the faces of them. But his voice was very similar to her uncles. But the questions was, why did he do it in the first place?

I think that would be like the layout but maybe that wouldn't be the end and if it was, I would have like a 2nd part to it. Actors, I think that Holly would be AnnaSophia Robb. I haven't thought of the other actors but she would be one of the ain charcters. The investiagtor would be a female though.

Here is the last activity!
Activity 3: Feast or Famine [6 points]
Julian Dennison is a very funny guy! He is from Lower Hutt, near Wellington. He is only 17 years old but he has already starred in a number of movies and TV commercials. You may have seen him on Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Deadpool, or in the Lynx ads.
Julian is not only a funny actor. He recently joined up with World Vision to be a 40 Hour Famine Ambassador. He travelled with World Vision to Uganda to meet some of the refugees from South Sudan who are living there. Check out this video.

For this activity, we would like to know if you would consider doing a 20 or 40 Hour Famine to raise money for charity.
On your blog, tell us whether, or not, you would participate in 20 or 40 Hour Famine. If you have already participated in a 20 or 40 Hour Famine, please share your experience, including why you decided to participate and some highlights and challenges of the experience. To get full points, please provide at least six sentences.

Fun Fact: Julian is a twin! His brother, Christian, is pretty different to Julian. He wants to study law and Te Reo Māori at university and then be a politician. Clever guy!

I have not done a 20 or 40 hour famine before but I have heard of it. I think that if I did though, I might do a 40 hour famine with my friends where we aren't allowed to use any device for that whole time. It would be a fun experience and I did not want to do this because my class, Rimu used to have like a40 hour famine where the year 7 and 8's would stay at the school at night and they would get picked up in the morning. It sounded like a fun thing to do but when I was year 7 or 8, we didn't get the chance too.
I think that I would want to do the 40 hour famine more as it would be more of a challenge and a fun experience as well.

Thats it for today, I hope you enjoyed! If you have any questions, then please ask! Otherwise, until next time, goodbye!

  1. Kia ora Parwin,

Great work on completing another Summer Learning Journey activity - keep up the good work. Don’t forget to comment back to blog commenters as well as on others SLJ blog posts to gain extra points.

What amazing aspirations you have for your future. It's great that you are aiming high and have a few ideas in mind. Being a criminologist would be such an amazing job. I think I would quite enjoy that as a job too! Do you know some places that you can study criminology?

Wow, that is an incredible movie plot you have written! You had me sitting on the edge of my seat. I am so glad that they found Holly and that she was OK for the most part. I look forward to seeing part 2 someday. Do you think they will catch who took Holly? Was it the Uncle?

A device 40 hour famine is a great idea. We went overseas to Europe and had no data on our phones while we were out and that was most of the time. It was so nice and we really enjoyed our time off devices. Do you think you would miss devices if you couldn't have them for that long?

Until next time, happy blogging :)

    1. Hello Emma, thank you so much for commenting on my blog!

I will remember to write lots of comments and reply to people who have commented as well!

I'm not sure which places but hopefully there are some places in New Zealand because I really want to be a private investigator or detective or an architect.

When my teachers read it to the class, everyone was holding their breath and gasped when they found out who it was. They might or they might not! I'm not going to give out any spoilers! Yes it was the uncle!

Which place in Europe did you go to? I think that I can reisit not using a device for 40 hours as I don't use my device too much but I can resist that. It would be a fun experience and if it was like camping or in the wild, it would be even better!

Thank you for taking your time and writing a positive comment,
      Parwin
