SLJ- 15!

Hello Bloggers, I'm back and at it again!
Today is the 14th day of the Summer Learning Journey and also the holidays! If you don't know what the Summer Learning Journey is then keep reading, otherwise, skip to the next paragraph! So the Summer Learning Journey happens through out the summer holidays and the reason why we should do it is because we spend all that time in school learning but when we have the holidays, we forget about everything because we are having so much fun! Then we have what is called a Summer Slump which kind of shows how your learning was, before and after the holidays. The reason why we should do it is so we don't forget everything we learnt but we also learn new things! If you come 1st, 2nd or 3rd, out of your school, then you win awesome prizes but if you come 1st out of your cluster you win a Chromebook or many other cool prizes! I think its worth it!

Each day, there are 2 main activities which are both worth 4 points and then there is a main activity which is worth 6 points. If you complete all of them, then you get 14 points in total! Each comment or reply you do as well is 2 points each! Okay, lets get started! This is what I have to do for the first activity!

So you might have heard of the Ministry of Education or the Ministry of Health, right? They are groups of people who give advice to the government. But have you heard of the Ministry of Inspiration? It sounds like fun, doesn’t it?! Well, this is a real organisation based in Nelson, New Zealand. Their aim is to get kids thinking creatively in the areas of science, technology, engineering, arts, maths and society (STEAMS).
The Ministry of Inspiration hosts many cool activities and events, including an Aquabot competition. Aquabots are underwater robots. Have you ever heard of them?

For this activity please watch this video about the Pasifika Aquabots competition that was held in Nelson. The students had to navigate their Aquabots around a swimming pool, collecting things and visiting different ‘islands.’
On your blog, tell us whether you would like to join an Underwater Robotics team at your school. Why or why not?

I will just do it here!
Judging from the video, Aquabots looks like a pretty fun thing to do. We haven't done anything like this at school so it would be fun to try something new. It is also creative how they have to get the objects and make it back to them so they can put it in their safe zone, or their boxes. It looks like a pretty fun thing to do and if we had to build it ourselves, although it would be a bit tricky, it would still be a fun experience.
Here is the 2nd activity!
Activity 2: Caine’s Arcade [4 points]
Caine Monroy is a 17 year old boy who lives in Los Angeles (L.A.), California. When he was younger, he spent his summer holidays at his dad’s work - an auto parts store in downtown L.A. While his dad was working, he decided to build himself something that he had always wanted - an arcade! He built an arcade all by himself out of cardboard boxes and things that he found lying around the shop.
One day a man came into the store to buy a handle for his car and he met Caine. Caine showed him what he had made and the man was so impressed with the arcade game that he made a movie about Caine and invited all the people in L.A. to come and play the games in Caine’s Arcade

For this activity we would like to know about your favourite game. It can be a board game, a card game, a game that you play outside with friends (e.g., rugby) or a quiet game that you play by yourself.
On your blog, tell us about your favourite game. What is it called? How do you play it?

Here is the last activity!

Activity 3: Choose your own
You have now made it to the end of Week 3 and have earned the right to choose your very own scientist, technologist, or inventor who you think has changed the world. There are no right or wrong choices for this activity, so find someone who interests you and tell us about them on your blog. It could be someone from your family, church or community or someone famous that you admire.
Here are some starting points in case you get stuck:
For this activity, choose one person and read all about them.
On your blog, provide us with:
The name of the person
A description of the work they do/have done
An explanation of how they/their work has had an impact on the lives of others

I have chosen Rosa Parks! She is an african american and back in those days, the black skinned people did not have equal rights. The white skinned people had more power and more oppurtunities. One day, Rosa Parks was on a bus and was sitting on one if the seats. A white skinned person came and expected her to move, but she didn't and disahreed with that person. She got known for that and she then had a protest with other african american people. In the 1960's, they finally won. After her death, about 4 years later, Barack Obama became the first african american president. What she did, impcated everyone's lives because she won the equal rights and they were all treated equally.
Thats it for today, I hope you enjoyed! If you have any questions then please ask! Otherwise, until next time, goodbye!

  1. Hi Parwin! It's Mia here from Yaldhurst. WOW! Awesome work! You have absolutely aced the activities and you have added in lot's of descriptions. I also really liked your prezi.

Your hockey explanation was great! I have never watched or played hockey before but I get a good idea of how it works. It's kind-of like 6 a-side netball, the positions are pretty similar. Which position do you play the most?

To improve, maybe you could explain what each position does and maybe add in some more visuals, not just on the prezi, but on the blog post in general.

    Great work!
    Mia

    1. Hello Mia, thank you so much for commenting on my blog!

Thanks for the tips on making it better. The name of the positions kind of explains what it does. But the striker is the one that kind of get the goals I guess, mid field is bring the ball up to the strikers. The defenders are helping the goaly and the goaly stops the goals!

If I have any time, then I will make sure to change some of the things to make it better!

Thank you for taking your time and writing a positive comment,

  2. Hey Parwin,

Well done on completing another days worth of activities! I can tell that you've been very busy.

I think it'd be fun to build an Aquabot too! When I was at school there was nothing like that available for us to try. It's so cool how things are changing and progressing.

Wow! What a cool video! It's super engaging and I love the interactive aspect of it. Hockey's a great choice. Such a fast game! What position do you play?

Rosa Parks is a very influential woman, isn't she? Do you think you could choose someone who you haven't already done an activity on though? It'd be good to hear about someone different.

Thanks Parwin. Have a great day! :)

    Bye for now,

    Mikey

    1. Hey Mikey, thank you so much for commenting on my blog!

Yeah, I have been busy and when I miss a day, I just do it the next day if I don't have any time.

I don't go to hockey club but hopefully I will be going to one this year because I asked my dad and he said yes but we need to enroll and everything. I usually play striker when we go to winter sports.

Maybe next time, I would choose someone different who I haven't already learnt about.

Thanks for taking your time and writing a positive comment,

    2. Kia ora Parwin,

That's a great way to go about it. I know that the summer holidays can be super busy so it's awesome that you're finding the time to do so many activities.

That's exciting! Are there many hockey clubs in your area? Awesome! Striker's the one that scores the goals, right? (As you can probably tell, I don't know much about the game).

      Have a wonderful weekend. :)

      Bye for now,

      Mikey
